Happy Monday!

1 painted love

Over the weekend I picked up (and dusted off) my paint brushes to take something that I'd been rolling around in my head for months onto a canvas. I actually painted over a painting I'd started last year and didn't like. I wanted something modern & fun above my bed and really large scale since I don't have a headboard yet. I'm in LOVE with this piece. Something about that segmented heart on all that bright white negative space does it for me! You can't see here but the perimeter edges of the canvas are painted back, so it gives the illusion of a frame.


I snapped a close up photo with my iPhone so you can see the heart & border...
I love that the texture of the previous painting shows through!!

0 artist spotlight: yves klein

Yves Klein was an early modernist artist from Nice, France. Notorious for his exclusive use of the color blue and provacative installation art, Yves was a pioneer in the Nouveau Realism movement in France. His works left the viewer asking many questions; and that was his exact intention, to provoke thoughts and feelings.

This is the painting he is probably most famous for:

Throughout the mid-50s Klien would show many monochromatic canvases like this, with much confused reactions from his followers. He felt that no one would ever understand these works, so he moved on to installations.

My favorite of his installations is the work he did with women's bodies as brushes. It's a brilliant way to show the beauty of the female figure in an interesting and artful way.



Notice the band in the back? He put on a great show!

0 artist spotlight: sonia delaunay

In 1964 Sonia Delaunay became the first living female to have a retrospective exhibit in the Louvre. Why am I just finding out about her? When I saw Heather highlight her on Habitually Chic this weekend I nearly jumped out of my seat. Her work reminds me of two of my favorite male artists, Josef Albers and Frank Stella.

Sonia concentrated most of her work on the interaction of color and geometric abstraction. Along with her husband, Robert Delaunay, this Parisian pioneered her own art movement; Orphism. Clearly, the influence of this movement was long standing, as we see many abstract painting reminiscent of this style up to today.






She was also a textile designer; translating her love for color and rhythm in to fun mod patterns.
